Welcome to the new Turns & Burns website!
I create unique hand-turned wooden gifts and decorative pieces in my workshop. Every item begins with a piece of wood, and choosing what each piece might become is one of the most enjoyable parts of the process. The natural colour, grain, knots and markings all help to shape the finished design.
You'll find a growing collection of bowls and platters, tea-light holders, pens, bottle soppers, lamps, pendants, Christmas decorations and other one-of-a-kind pieces. Because each item is made individually by hand, no two will ever be exactly alike.
Many of my pieces are made from locally sourced or reclaimed wood. Some even come with their own story- perhaps from a tree in a local garden, a salvaged shrub root or a piece of timber that might have otherwise been overlooked. I love being able to give that wood new purpose and preserve some of its character in the finished piece.
Some of my work also features fractal burning, sometimes known as the Lichtenberg effect. This creates the distinctive branching patterns that travel across the wood. The burn follows its own path through every piece, so the final pattern can never be completely predicted or repeated.
The bowl pictured above is a lovely example. Its detailed fractal pattern spreads around the inside edge, framing the natural grain at its centre. It is no longer available- it was claimed by my daughter Aimee and now has pride of place on her kitchen table- but it remains one of my favourite examples of how beautifully woodturning and fractal burning can work together.
Alongside the products, I'll also be sharing stories from my workshop, photographs showing how pieces are made, information about different woods and news about upcoming events. New items will continue to be added as they are completed.
